| Several different mission churches were built
on this site in the early 1700s. The existing church was built between
1830 and 1832. It has been long been a revered site, and people from
Arizona and Sonora have made pilgrimages to the church to honor San
Francisco. In 1966, Father Eusebio Kino's grave was discovered near the
church. A monument was built over the remains, and a large plaza and park
was laid out around the church and grave.
